47th Division had been involved in heavy fighting on the Somme during September and early October, 1916, but by the end of October they had moved north and now found themselves holding the line in the southern part of the Ypres salient. On 8th November, 18th London of 141 Brigade, left their reserve positions at Vlamertinghe and moved into the front line trenches in the Ypres left sub-sector where they stayed until relieved on 18th November. The Battalion Diary entry for 15th November simply records that they were in the line and things were quiet. Be that as it may but it was not quiet enough for Henry Alden who was killed on that day, probably by shell fire. |
